-Scuba Diving Gauges: These monitor four things. A compass provides directional information. A pressure gauge tells you how much air is left in your tank. A depth gauge tells you how deep you are. A bottom timer tells you how long you have been underwater. These are crucial: time and depth need to be managed to avoid the disease known as the bends. Air pressure is also crucial — without air in the tank, you have no air source.
-Dive Masks: This functions by creating a pocket of air in front of your eyes and allows you to see clearly underwater. (Note: It does not do anything to prevent pressure from being applied to the eye — they can handle the pressure).
-Scuba Octopuses. A spare second stage — see below.
-Scuba Regulators. This is what allows you to breath while underwater. The regulator has two stages — one reduces the pressure from over 1000psi to around 100psi (a bit of a fudge here) and is called the first stage. The second stage is attached to the hose and is what goes in your mouth. It reduces the pressure further and is a demand valve.
-Snorkels: This allows you to breath (while on he surface) but with your face in the water.
-Scuba Tanks: This is a metal cylinder that contains pressured air. A tank will typically hold over 3000 PSI.
-Diving Weights and Belts: The belt holds the weights to you. It is designed to be released in an emergency. The goal of the diver is to be neutrally bouyant. Because some Dive Equipment (wetsuit) and most people are naturally bouyant, some weight must be worn to be neutrally bouyant.
-Dive Reels: This is a specialized piece of gear that is used in a few different contexts. It can be used to mark a route underwater (most often in cave and Wreck Diving), or to help when setting up a search pattern. (Both caves and wrecks are hazardous environs where you cannot not ascend directly to the surface and where it is possible to be in zero viz from a silt out). It can also be used to help guide a surface float up.

Ocho Rios is a cool town with lots of tourist type activities. There is ample shopping, dining and partying. Dunns River Falls is nearby so is Dolphin Cove where you can swim/interact with the dolphins. We did this past July and it was a remarkable experience!!
In Ocho Rios there is the famed CHUKKA tour group. They have a host of activities you can engage in. They have river-tubing, tree gliding, horseback riding in the tropics or by the beach, as you mentioned the ATV jungle tour. You can take a trip to the Martha Brae river and enjoy a tranquil bamboo rafting experience!! It is quite relaxing and so lush with greenery!
There is the famed Annie Palmer house (ghostly myths abound) in Rosehall.
Montego Bay is a must-visit town. It is really happening with tons of activities day and night. A really cool place to hang out is at Margaritaville. They have tons of cool, fun activities and it is located on the ‘Hip Strip’.
I have travelled pretty much the entire island of Jamaica and the best location I experienced is Negril. In particular we stayed at Point Village resort where you have an option to purchase an all inclusive plan or a ‘European plan’. Of course as you are aware the all inclusive includes all meals, drinks, daily entertainment, certain shopping excursions and non-motorized water sports.
The European plan is a plan that you customize and pay for what you would like at the resort. It allows you the non-motorized water sports, entertainment and whatever meals/drinks you pay for.
I think all-inclusive is a better bet. If you do not eat or drink much then the European plan may be better.
Anyway, Point Village is a beautiful tropical paradise that caters to singles, couples and families. It is in a great location with lush landscaping that is well maintained and it has a picturesque sunset. It is located about fifteen minutes from the Negril town where there is ample shopping and sightseeing. It is nearby the ‘Jungle’ night club and a skip away from Margaritaville (lots of fun there). There is the famous Rick’s Cafe in Negril where you can go have a nice relaxing time or if you are a bit adventurous like me, you can jump off the cliff into the crystal blue waters (lifeguards on hand).
Another nice night club is the ‘Loveboat’. Also, almost every night there is a beach party (most times free, sometimes a minimal fee) on the seven-mile beach that runs from Point Village.
Montego Bay is a nice town but it is busier than Negril. I went and climbed to the peak of the Blue Mountains in the Kingston area and it was quite an experience! I have also visited the mineral bath in ST. Thomas parish and that was an experience of a lifetime. The mineral bath comprise of a hot spring oozing out of the rocks where you can go by and get a nice body massage.
I have stayed in Ocho Rios, Trelawny, Runaway Bay and Kingston too and also had a great time. From my experiences there I feel Negril is the best spot on the island.
Some place I have stayed and enjoyed the accomodations, staff, service, entertainment are: FDR Pebbles in Trelawny (about 40 minutes from the airport in MOBAY), FDR in Runaway Bay (about an hour from the airport), Holiday Inn in MOBAY (about 15 minutes from the airport) and yes my favorite Point Village in Negril (about an hour and fifteen minutes from the airport).
The roads to Negril are new and the buses are reliable so you get there in a jiffy.

Yes you wear flippers, but you still have to know how to swim to propel yourself through the water. You could pull off snorkeling with a swim vest, but not deep sea diving.

A quick question for EXPERIENCED Scuba divers / snorkelers?

I’m just getting into snorkeling and Scuba Diving and want to get a really good mask/snorkel/fins to begin with. Unfortunately, I do not live anywhere close to a Dive Shop and have to order these items online. The store has said not to worry about sizes, as I can send back and exchange sizes at no charge to myself (which is really rare and nice of them). But I am not sure which brand or model to go with, especially for fins.
What would you consider to be the very best set of fins, if money was not an issue? Atomic? Mares? Should I get split fins?
Do dry snorkels really work? Do they close when submerged? If you have a good dry snorkel what brand did you get?
Thanks a bunch. Any extra advice or abuse you want to include for a rookie Scuba Diver/snorkeler would be appreciated. I will be taking a Padi or Naui course in the winter on vacation, but wanted to practice snorkeling all summer and fall.
You have to decide if you intend to Dive In warm climates or cold climates first. If you intend to dive anywhere other than those southern states that are along the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll have to have cold climate fins which accomodate your foot + a 3-5 mm bootie whereas warm climate fins slip right onto your bare foot. Hopefully you know this already.
If I assume cold climate, then I’m a Mares Volo believer! This fin has a pivot point in the middle of the fin to make your kick a little easier with more propulsion. If you go with a Mares Quatro, you’re not going to like it! I have this fin, and it was “the most powerful” back in the day when I bought my “best equipment”. This sucker has some great propulsion, but only if you have tree trunks for legs! To kick this fin for a whole dive will get your legs cramping up real quick unless your in better than average athletic shape.
Soon after these fins came out, the split fins came out. At that time, it helped let people kick a little easier with more propulsion than regular fins but not quite as much as the Quatro. Then Mares came out with a middle fin, the Volo. The addition of the pivot made the Quatro design easier to kick.
As for snorkels, there’s a few considerations. If you intend to do a significant amount of snorkeling then a dry snorkel is definitely worth the price. They definitely stay 95-99% dry, and they’ll stay mostly dry underwater. BUT, that’s a good *and* a bad thing. Good for obvious reasons, but BAD because when you scuba dive, that air in the snorkel will *pull* up on the side of your mask because there’s air in it! That really sucks. It’s really uncomfortable on the side of your face. I have an Ocean Master dry snorkel, and I don’t even use it on most dives for that reason–the only time I bring it is if it looks like the conditions warrant it, but that’s not a good habit, you should always bring a snorkel.
Another thing to consider: stiffness. If your snorkeling, stiffness keeps the thing pointed in the right direction. If your diving, the stiffness only bangs against the side of your face while it wobbles on the side of your mask.
My preference/recommendation would be to have a medium stiff soft rubber snorkel for diving without the dry feature.
Other advice. 90% of my equipment I bought at Diver’s Direct in Florida. I can say without a doubt, they have *the* best prices and they have *the* best customer service. I’ve ordered from them online, and I’ve even been to their stores and in both ways, they people are knowledgable, friendly and helpful! You can quote me on that! But also remember that when possible, always try to buy what you can afford at your local Dive Shops, nobody really gets rich selling equipment, you’ll just be helping out fellow divers and that’s a great thing!

And even thought one resides in a warmer region, the water temperature is not necessarily reflected by the temperature outside, and can be considerably colder.
