I’d love to hear from some teens who have been fortunate enough to take an amazing Caribbean holiday with their family or just one parent.
I’m a single Dad of 2 teens boys. 13 and 15. I took them both to Jamaica (Beaches, SandyBay, in Negril) several years ago and they absolutely ate up the beach and ocean, sunshine and carefree living on an all-inclusive resort. My older son took a Scuba Diving course, they both went para-sailing and we just a phenomenal time over-all.
I’m finally able to take them away again…4 or 5 years later.
I could take them back to Sandy Bay or even to a larger Beaches resort next to Sandy Bay, in Negril. But I’d LOVE to hear from teens around my kid’s ages if they have any suggestions based on their personal experience!

Some great Islands ive been to are Trinidad, Tobago, The Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Couzemel, Mexico. Cruises are really fun, but I think you should fly, depending on how long you plan to stay. I highly recommend the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, I haven’t been to that specific resort yet, but I saw videos and stuff about. Another great choice is Trinidad.

Where can I find good deals on Scuba gear and what should I be getting?
I just became SCUBA and Nitrox certified in the fall and am trying to find a way to get some of my own gear. Because I want to practice nautical archaeology for a career, I need to have all my own gear in order to volunteer at excavations, but being a college student, I can’t exactly afford top of the line.
Looking online, I’ve found a lot of “wetsuit packages” and that sort of thing that seem like they would be promising. But I’m not sure what IS a deal and what isn’t– or rather, what the typical prices for each piece of equipment should be.
I prefer a bladder BC like a backpack to the inflatable vests. If I have nothing but a mask, snorkel, fins, and booties, WHAT DO I NEED (not including air tanks) and what sorts of features should I be looking for on everything?
So you want a tech harness for a BC? You just bumped up your budget by at least 300 bucks over most BC’s. Then when you factor in pockets and integrated lead, another 200-300 bucks.
Sounds to me like you’re best off hitting some local Dive Shops, especially those that have in house dive clubs since as soon as someone mentions the word “deal”, that’s about the only place you’ll get one. They’ll usually have used gear on consignment, it will have been inspected by the shop and will be in good condition.
What do you need? Well, how much are you willing to spend and what are you willing to rent? Sorry, but this is up to you. I spent 3 grand right off the bat and was more or less fully equipped.
Tech rig BC ( which is what you asked about), about 800 bucks minimum. Going doubles? Add 125-175 bucks for a back plate. Manifold? 300 bucks. Regs? 400-1500 bucks.
Wet suit? 700 bucks cold water. Dry suit? You’re starting at 1000 bucks to 2 grand. Booties, gloves and hood? Another 150 bucks. Dive Knife? 80-150 bucks. Dive Computer ( pretty well a must have these days and you’re nitrox) 300 bucks-2 grand. Ideally you’ll want a 3 gas model but a 2 gas will do. Wreck reel? 60 -200 bucks.
See where I’m going here? I have no clue as to your actual budget. Prices vary widely depending on manufacturer and even where you buy a particular piece.
Wetsuit packages? You don’t mention the temperature of water you plan on doing your Diving In. About 200 bucks difference there usually between 5mm and 7mm fulls.
Your “best deal” is gear that fits you, does what you want it to do when you want it to do it and does it safely. I really can’t advise you on particular gear types or manufacturers unless I know a budget and what temps you’ll be diving.

What Padi qualification do I need to scubba Dive In egypt?
I’ve never Scuba dived or had training and I’m a bit confused by all the different courses PADI offer. I plan to go to egypt and spend one day diving, seeing the fish etc.
Could someone tell me specifically which level I should do etc.
If all you want to do is a single dive on one day, then you don’t need to do a full certification course–just sign yourself up for an ‘intro-dive’. The official PADI version is called ‘Discover Scuba Diving‘, which must be conducted to a specifc set of standards, and thus will most likely include a little more instruction than a ‘standard-issue’ intro-dive (also known as a ‘tea-bag dive’, because the client gets dipped briefly, swirled around for 20 mins or so, and pulled out again).
Your best guarantee of a decent experience is to sign up at a registered Dive Centre. Although many of the snorkel-trip dayboats operating out of Sharm/Hurghada offer the possibility to do intro-dives, the instructional/safety standards may be lower; e.g. the equipment used may not have been properly maintained, or your ‘guide’ might not even be qualified to teach/lead uncertified divers.
Bear in mind though that you’ll get nothing from the experience except memories (underwater souvenir collection is illegal in Egypt, never mind being extremely environmentally unfriendly). If you think you might ever want to go diving again in the future, then it would make more sense for you to sign up for a certification course in the first place.
PADI’s most basic certification level is the Scuba Diver (SD) course, which takes 2 days (1 day pool and theory training, 2 logged open-water dives), and qualifies you to dive to a max. 12 m (40 ft) with a Padi Divemaster/instructor, anywhere in the world.
Having completed the SD training, and if you wish to do so, at any point thereafter you can upgrade to the Padi Open Water Diver (2 more days: 1 day more pool and theory training and 2 more dives), extending your competence to 18 m max.depth, ‘buddy’ diving with another OWD.

Ebay is the best bet but expect to pay a little although vintage scuba gear isn’t normally used much any more so it can be picked up quite cheaply. Just remember that it is hard to keep vintage gear in good working condition as the parts are hard to come by and servicing is difficult so most vintage gear cannot be used diving any more.

The cruise line that you choose for your cruise travel will give you guidelines on what to pack for evening wear. Seven day cruises usually have two formal nights, a dark suit or tuxedo for the gentlemen, and a cocktail dress or gown for the ladies. All cruise ships have Tuxedo rentals but I recommend purchasing your own. You will get plenty of use out of it after you fall in love with cruising. (Ten day cruise have three formal nights).
There are also “informal” nights where it’s a jacket and a tie, and a dress or pants suit. The remainder of the evenings will be “resort casual”. On some of our cruise vacations Scottish Gentlemen wore kilts and sporran and we have also seen ceremonial African Garb. Shorts, jeans and tee shirts are unacceptable in the dining room at dinner.
There are cruise lines that have no “formal” nights. Windjammer is shorts and T Shirts all day and all night. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of dressing up tell your travel agent so he/she can give you the options for ships that have alternative dining or ships that don’t have the formal nights.
Some of the Cruise Lines have theme nights, RCCL has country and western night, Costa has Toga Night, Princess throws a Caribbean Party etc. Your Agent should know if the cruise line you have selected has any of these special party nights so that you can be prepared if you wish to participate in the activities.
If you are going to a warm climate I recommend that you pack at least two bathing suits since you might swim in the morning (water aerobics anyone?) then go to the dining room for lunch, and decide afterwards to go back to the pool. There is nothing worse than putting on a cold, wet suit.
Don’t forget the suntan lotion and a hat plus a good quality pair of sunglasses. If you are planning to wear a dress that has no sleeves, remember this when tanning so that you don’t have unsightly tan lines that will completely ruin the look of your dress.
I bring several pairs of prescription glasses (both clear and sun) in case one gets lost. Even in Alaska the glare was pretty strong and you will get sunburned there too. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!!!!
I pack a bathing suit and cover up in my carry on luggage. It may take a few hours for your luggage to be delivered to your room and this way you have a suit to wear on the deck right away, if you are on a ship that you have previously cruised.
Cruise Tip: It is smart to pack a light sweater for day time and a pretty shawl for the evening even on Caribbean Cruises since some of the ships are quite cold. Twice I have broken this rule and had to buy a sweatshirt on board.
If you haven’t cruised on the cruise line before, after dropping off your carry on luggage in your room, head for the buffet, then tour the ship to get your bearings. This is especially important on the huge mega-liners. Some cruise lines give a tour of the ship on the first day, if they do, take it. Check your daily sheet for the time. The sheet will be in your cabin when you arrive. Ask your cabin steward to leave two in the future so that both of you know what is going on and at what time. There should be a layout guide of the entire ship in your room. If not, go to the purser’s office (reception) and ask for one for you and whomever you’re traveling with.
The day you arrive at the ship, after you’ve gotten the layout, make any appointments you want; hair, nails, or massages, appointments sell out very quickly for formal nights and days at sea. If you are using the traditional dining option make sure it is correct, if it isn’t go see the Maitre d’. He will try very hard to accommodate you.
And by all means don’t miss the sail away party on deck as you are leaving port. Some ports make a big deal out of this. For instance in Fort Lauderdale the Condos at the end of the channel toot horns, blink lights, and ring bells to the departing ship. The ship then toots back three or four times. In Edinburgh they had a group of bagpipers serenade us out, and in Viet Nam they had a local group of young girls do traditional dances in traditional garb as we left port. Very cool, and great pictures for your photo album.
On the subject of packing, don’t over pack, every cruise review stresses this. I am very guilty of this particular problem, but I live across the channel from the port we frequently use. Keep in consideration that if you are flying there are definite weight restrictions. They will make you pay if your bags are too heavy.
Stuff things little items into your packed shoes to save on space. Don’t bring shoes for every outfit. One pair of sturdy shoes for touring, one pair of casual shoes and one pair of dressy shoes will get you through.
Buy travel size appliances i.e., curlers, irons and blow dryers (on most cruise lines today hair dryers are provided but they are not very powerful). Shampoo and Conditioner, body lotion, soap and shower caps are all provided. On Caribbean Cruise I pack a small spritz bottle, the kind you use to spray your plants, so when we are swimming in the salt water I can spray off the salt on my face and body when we get out. It tends to dry out my skin making me very uncomfortable. The beaches in Fort Lauderdale have showers but that is not always true for the rest of the world.
Tape a copy of your itinerary on the inside of your suitcase so if it gets lost the airline will know where to send it. Make sure your have toiletries, medications, bathing suit and cover up (if going to a warm climate) as well as a couple of pairs of clean underwear packed in your carry on in case your luggage is delayed.

Scuba in Ochi is not easy…the few hotels that offer it, won’t allow you on the property to even talk to the dive master unless you call 1st for an appt., then you need to buy a day pass to be on the grounds. It really is stupid & sucks ! If you want to snorkel, bring your own & go to Reggae Beach, just 8-10 minutes east of Ochi, it has a great reef close to shore and its amazing…$5 to get in. Another 5 minutes east of that is Couples Hotel…next to Couples is a free beach where you get in the water and swim the reef.
Going the other direction to the west of Ochi is Runaway Bay, theres a dive master with a boat to take you out, not sure of the charge, but expect $75 for one dive, $120 or so for 2. You’ll see the diving flag off to the right ( beach ) side when you come into Runaway Bay, its about 20-25 minutes from Ochi.
Last place is another 20 minutes west of Runaway Bay in Discovery Bay at a hotel called Club Ambience. They will allow you to enter the hotel & a german couple run the dive shop there. The price is $75 for a 30 minute dive.
