also should i use a rebreather? if not please tell me what i should use as well as how much it costs

1: Wetsuit: Prices vary by thickness of the suit. The thicker, the warmer. Generally, from US $150 to $500

2: Rebreather: Unless you have special training, you cannot use a rebreather. $6000-$10000

3: Tanks: Tanks vary by the make of the tank, steel or aluminum. Aluminum tanks are generally around US $150 for the standard 80cf. Steels start at $250 and go up from there.

4: Lessons: From $150 – $300, USD

5: Diving bag: Save yourself some cash, and get a rolling duffel bag, or large rolling suitcase. $50 for either of those. “Dive” bags will run $200 to $300 for the nicer ones.

6: Mask / fins / snorkel: You need these to take your certification classes. Usually $150 to $200 will get you the basics. Prices can go up from there, if you get fancier gear to start.

7: BCD: The vest you wear in the water to control your buoyancy. $350 – $700.

8: Regulators: The breathing gear most of the diving world uses. $500-$1500.

Do yourself a favor. Buy your basic start up gear. Take and pass your certifications class. Then decide if you want to get into diving. Then buy your gear.

Scuba Diving – Choosing Fins   by Lilah Tusko

Choosing a fin for scuba diving is not as easy as you may imagine. What appears such a simple device is actually a fair bit of complicated engineering. The following tips will help new scuba divers choose the right fins for their dive.

Fins are like shoes; they have to fit you well so you can be comfortable in them and they can function optimally. But shoe fit can be adjusted using socks and also shoes are so readily available. If you are uncomfortable in one pair, you can always change into another. In the case of fins, it’s likely to be your only pair so make sure you get the right one.

Before trying on fins, make sure you wash your feet so that there is no dirt or sand sticking to your feet. Try on several pairs so you can compare them for fit and comfort. Once you slip on the fins, move your legs and ankles up and down. Water offers greater resistance than air, still moving the fins in the air will give you some indication of how they move against resistance. Make sure the fins fit snug – neither too tight nor too loose. Loose fins scrape the skin around the edge of the boot as well as the skin inside the boot causing soreness. If the fins are too tight, they will hamper your movement. Fins should seal well around the foot or ankle (in case of full fins) but not crush your foot.

The other challenge for both the fin designer and the diver using the fin is to strike a balance between flexibility and stiffness. Stiff fins help provide good thrust, while flexible fins ensure that the leg muscles don’t wear out too quickly.

Split fins are a recent innovation that tries to tackle this issue. The traditional fin comprises a large continuous web typically measuring about 8 inches wide and 16 inches long. Length and width can vary from fin to fin. Split fins also come in the same range of sizes but they have a space in the middle. Split fins allow the Scuba Diver to produce significant thrust with less effort. The disadvantage is in terms of lesser maneuverability which makes turning slower compared to traditional designs. If you are an underwater photographer who needs to spin quickly to photograph some elusive sea creature, you may want to try both the traditional and the split fin so you can compare.

The other important factor in fin selection is buoyancy. Scuba divers must maintain neutral buoyancy in order to minimize the fatigue of ascending and descending. Typically fins are floatable, so if you lose them underwater, you can retrieve them at the surf ace. If your fins constantly pull at your feet, you will find it difficult to maintain neutral buoyancy. On the other hand, if the fins are positively buoyant, you could balance them with ankle weights, but that’s only going to make you buy and use an extra piece of equipment. The best thing to do is find out the degree of buoyancy of your fins before buying them.

There are a host of other factors that will influence the comfort and convenience of the fins. Do you want full fitting fins that come over your ankle? Do you want a booty insert or not? Do you want a regular heel strap or a quick release clasp?

The Evolution Of The Surfing Wetsuit   by Chris Kennelly

The surfing wetsuit was originally two pieces of rubber that were not exactly the most flexible items to wear when going swimming, diving or surfing, with the wearers thereof having to put powder on their bodies in order to enable them to put the suits on properly. The strength of the suits were also somewhat dodgy in that if they were pulled too hard to too rigorously then the suit could be torn into pieces.

Great strides in technology as well as countless hours of research have resulted in the surfing wetsuit becoming something so much more functional, stylish and useful than these predecessors. Together with new stylish designs and applications it has now become somewhat of a fashion statement for many a surfer when hitting the waves.

The original rubber backed material of the surfing wetsuit has advanced to the neoprene material which is essentially the crux of any wetsuit, as this material allows for a layer of water to be trapped inside of the material, and is heated up by the body temperature of the wearer. This layer of insulation is the barrier between the colder water and the warmer body, which therefore retains some of the heat and prevents conditions such as hypothermia.

Additional manufacturing process breakthroughs for the wetsuit include the way that the wetsuit is put together. This includes the process of blind stitching, as well gluing within the seams, which provides a much more solid surfing wetsuit, and in turn providing a better insulation for the wearer thereof. Question for Scuba divers…?

I am looking into diving the Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef in Belize next year. I only have 4 dives under my belt now and an open water diver card. The Hole is just over 200 feet deep.

Will my C-Card allow me to dive this site, or do I need further training (advanced/technical training)? Having trouble getting an answer from anyone down there this time of year. (Lighthouse Reef Resort is closed).

It’s a wall dive and it’s actually twice as deep @ over 400ft. There’s no need to drop to the bottom anyway even if you were certified for it since a majority of the wildlife and corals are at around your limit of 60 feet or shallower. Just keep within your training and you’ll have a blast on the wall and the shallow reefs near the mooring block.
In the end, it’s all going to depend on the dive operator you book with. I’m fairly certain they’ll insist on a DM accompanying you.

If you are just talking about regular, recreational dive gear for a couple of divers, my Nissan Xterra offers plenty of room. I have put three divers, all of our gear (including Drysuits), and extra items for our students. It was stuffed, but everything fit.

I have seen a couple people use a full size van. They have customized it some to all racks and shelves to hold everything.

~How do I pack for the water park? ( I don’t have to pack my swim suit, just wear it under my clothes)
~How should I do my makeup? ( I have a bit of redness that I would like to cover up, long dark brown hair, and greenish-blue eyes…And I don’t do eye makeup because I’m a contact wearer, so when I put on eyeliner..It’s a mess! Plus, I can’t go out and buy waterproof makeup at the last minute.)
~ How should I do my hair? ( I currently have my wet hair in braids for some waves, but what else should I do? French braid my bangs?)

Surfers needed..wetsuit question?

Just wondering what you guys use for your Wetsuits?

I’m a Scuba Diver and have a 5mm Cressi Castoro wetsuit.
What mm wetsuit do you guys wear in:
a) Sunny climates (Florida, California)
b) Colder climates (Newquay, UK etc)

Just wondering if this wetsuit is too thick to use as a surf wetsuit, as I have a surfing course booked this summer..something I’m gonna take up full time but wondering if I need to invest in a new wetsuit specifically for surfing or whether my Cressi will suffice.

a) well in california it really depends you might in sanfran and it can be frezzing and it might warm and sunny in san diego. Even down south though you should get a 3-2 for those cold days central coast probably a 3-2 or a 4-3 if you get cold fast. So for california i would suggest a 3-2 or a 4-3 and for florida mabey a spring suite.

b) Ill be honest and say that Iv’e never been to the Uk so sorry but if you say it it’s pretty cold then mabey a 5 mm.

I’ll arrive in Hobart the 3rd of october and I’ll say till the end of feb. I’m from Italy and I have just 20kg for my luggage…. what do I have to bring with me? is it cold in that period? do you wear flip flops or it’s too cold? trainers? t-shirt or jumpers?
shorts or long trousers? wind-breaker, jeans jaket or leather jaket? swim-suit? or wetsuit? there is any beach life like in sydney or it’s not warm enough? I know that are stupid questions but in 20kg of luggages I can’t make errors!!!!!

hi there! im a tasmanian who just came back from a holiday to italy abit over a month ago. OK you need take a jumper ( one will be fine), long pants, a pair of shorts/skirt/ dress or whatever you want to wear. T-shirts.Take a pair of runners as well as some thongs. I would advise taking a pair of bathers as well as your Wetsuits becasue the water can be quite cold. AND of course there are beaches!!!! there are heaps of lovely ones and they are very clean and guess what..they have sand!!take a hat and sunscreen. you will get some lovely sunny days but the weather can change quickly! it could b a lovely sunny day-28 degrees celcius and then later in the day it could start pouring with rain. Night time also gets quite cold.
Just pack abit of everything and you will be right. You will get a lot of Australian dollars for your Euro so you can just go shopping in town and buy some cheap clothes you need.

So, you’re interested in finding the perfect beach in Naples, Florida? We’ve profiled six of the dozen or more beaches in Collier County, the County in which Naples resides. The Paradise Coast, as this area is called, is famous for its sugar white Florida beach sand that stretches from Barefoot Beach Preserve at the northern tip of the County, throughout the city of Naples, along the four miles of Marco Island’s crescent shoreline, and into the deserted Ten Thousand Island region of the Everglades. The beach parks range from those with full facilities to simple access points perfect for long beach walks on deserted sands. There are numerous beach access points in downtown Naples, as well as Tigertail Beach Park and the South Beach public access on Marco Island. You will find beautiful surroundings, warm sands and spectacular sunsets no matter where you choose to lose your shoes and dip your toes in the sand.

You have lots of choices in terms of Naples lodging; Naples inns, gulf resorts, Naples golf resorts and even a few Naples motels. Naples. Florida restaurants are some of the best in Florida. Café de Marco on Marco Island, has been in the business of catering to Marco Island residents for over 25 years. Vergina on 5th Avenue in Naples, is another fabulous Italian restaurant worthy of your patronage. They also have a lively bar with entertainment.

Of Special Interest: One of the most popular seashore destinations
in Naples, this park’s mile long stretch of white sugar sand has been
rated one of the best beaches in the nation. In season, the park
closes its gates when it reaches capacity, so get there early.

Barefoot Beach County Park (Preserve)
