So I’ve decided on my snorkel and mask set, but what about fins? What are the best to go with?
The snorkel and mask set that I’ve decided to go with is the U.S. Divers Sideview Mask and Snorkel Combo. It doesn’t have a purge in the mask, but that’s okay, there is one in the snorkel, along with a valve that completely prevents water from getting in. The problem is…what fins do I get?
Fit is going to be your primary concern. After that it all comes down to your kick style. People tend to kick a little different from one another. There are two primary types of fins on the market at the moment.
1/ Split fins. For some people, this type of fin provides speed and less leg fatigue.They come in several “stiffness” grades. They don’t work with my kick style though so I don’t use them. I find I go nowhere fast. It may be different for you.
2/ Blade style fins. This is a traditional fin. Some are stiffer than others requiring a little more leg work but faster speed. Less stiff blades require less leg work but you move a little slower since some of your leg energy is bled off and wasted as the fins flex. I personally use stiff Aqualung Blades. They simply work best for my kick style and I don’t fatigue.
The next thing to consider in fins is open heel or closed. You can get the above types of fins in either configuration. Closed heel means you wear the fin barefoot or with water socks on. Open heel fins require the use of booties. Your choice here depends on the temperature of water you’re in. Closed heel doesn’t provide your tootsies with much insulation. Open heel does because you’re wearing a boot that’s typically 5mm in thickness.
Bottom line…beg borrow or steal as many different fins as you can and try them out before you purchase anything. Find what works for you…not what works for someone else.
Edit: By the way, having a purge in the snorkel won’t help you purge your mask. You don’t need a purge in a mask anyway, they’re easy enough to clear even underwater if you use the proper technique. Tilt your head up, lift a bit of the bottom part of the mask skirt away from your face and blow out your nose a little bit. It’ll displace the water in there, forcing it out.

a wetsuit that’s at all big on you is totally worthless, so it sounds like you got the right size. your suit needs to be skintight to prevent cold water from coming in. that’s how Wetsuits work. it should feel like a 2nd skin, and yet be flexible enough so that you can move your arms and legs well enough to surf. if the next size up was a tiny bit too big on dry land it would’ve been waaay to big in the water. the neoprene gives a fair bit when it’s wet and any amount of space between the suit and your skin would only end up bunching up or ballooning with icy cold water. you don’t want that. hang in there. you’ll get used to it and in time even love being in your suit. pretend you’re a superhero. as a surfer you sort of are one.

Ocho Rios – Dunn’s River is a hot spot and worth visiting. If you can, go as soon as you reach port so you can beat all of the tour groups and crowds. There are a couple shopping spots right outside of the port with your usual stuff – t-shirts, cigars, jewelry, etc. Beach wise – Mahogany Beach and Reggae Beach are decent but unfortunately the beaches in Ocho Rios don’t compare to the ones in the other two ports.
Grand Cayman – A kitschy little tourist spot is Hell. Not a whole lot to see there but a fun spot to send a postcard from. Best snorkeling I have ever done was on Cemetery Beach. There is a reef about 100 yds off shore with tons of fish and even a sea turtle or two. Not very deep, maybe about 15 – 20ft and calm clear water.
Cozumel – Downtown is full of touristy souvenir stuff. Unless you are looking to buy silver, there’s not a whole lot down there. Another good spot for snorkeling is at Chaankanaab. Tons of fish that come right up next to you. They also have the “swim with the dolphins” stuff, a small beach and pool.
