Scuba Diving is one of the most adventurous and exciting activities on and underwater. It enables one to see the spectacles of marine life like natural habitats and coral reefs. It also builds one’s confidence. Divers are able to prove that they are capable of swimming depths most people would be afraid to go. Many people enroll in scuba Diving Courses to learn the proper scuba diving techniques.
Professional divers train novices in the field. These trainings enable them to learn the fundamental skills in swimming underwater. They are taught about the use and purpose of diving equipment. They are also taught the necessary skills in plunging with apparatuses on the body. They learn the proper ways of fitting and wearing gear and controlling pressure gauge.
Basic lessons in scuba diving train beginners on how to control and handle their regulator. This facilitates breathing underwater. Every diver must know how to attach and adjust this device on pressure tanks. This enables them to recover the device when it breaks down during diving or when it is knocked out from his or her mouth. Regulator recovery is one of the most important things that a novice must learn from his or her instructor.
Clearing, removal, and replacement of masks are other indispensable knowhow in diving. A mask protects the face from water and any material that may come with it. It also holds the mouthpiece in place. Sometimes, the mask needs to be partially removed and flooded with water in order to defog it. A diver must know how to bring it back to position to normalize breathing. In Whitsunday scuba diving
, for instance, beginners are taught how to sustain breathing while they are clearing out their masks.
There are instances when masks need to be removed to adjust the straps. Sometimes, although very rarely, they are also pulled away from the face. In these cases, one must be equipped with the skill in replacing masks while maintaining an adequate amount of air in the body. For this reason, experts like Whitsunday scuba diving
professionals emphasize the need for every diver to learn this method.
In Australia,
Whitsundays diving
is among the most popular scuba Diving Destinations for both locals and tourists. Licensed divers in the area teach starters the do’s and don’ts of their much loved hobby.

Do Scuba dive computers help you with determining your decompression stops?
I haven’t used one yet..but I’m just wondering if the computer will help me determine what depth I need to stop at to decompress and for how long..
Some do, some don’t. Since your question contains the term “stops” I’m interpreting this to be about whether a Dive Computer can handle multiple decompression stops vs a single decompression stop.
Planned decompression is beyond the scope of recreational Scuba Diving, so dive computers that are designed for technical diving usually have the capability to calculate multiple staged decompression stops while dive computers that are designed for recreational diving may not.
Recreational dive computers WILL determine that you have entered into a required decompression mode and will inform you how long you need to stay at your required decompression stop, but several of the older computers that I’ve owned only allowed for a single decompression stop at a depth of 10 or 15 feet.
Most modern recreational computers do have convenient safety stop timers that will tell you how much time is remaining in your (optional) safety stop, but a safety/precautionary stop is different than a required decompression stop. For recreational divers, a safety stop is recommended but can safely be omitted while a required decompression stop is not recommended and should be avoided. Dives that require more than one (staged) decompression stop are well beyond the recreational level.
If you are performing dives that require staged decompression as a recreational diver, you are exceeding your level of training. You would need to pursue technical training to be able to plan and execute those types of dives safely.

Your Many Options To Scuba Dive Bahamas by Christine OKelly
If you are into Scuba Diving, you should consider this tropical locale for many remarkable diving opportunities. The commonwealth features some of the most fertile and pristine waters full of diverse species of plant and marine life. Scuba diving here is one of the most enjoyable parts of vacationing in this island paradise. However, there are a few fantastic opportunities you don’t want to miss when you dive Bahamas.
Many local scuba diving companies offer packages for divers of every age and skill level. From Freeport to Nassau, you can have an adventure to remember just by throwing on your wetsuit, grabbing your gear, and meeting local experts in the water.
Diving From Nassau
Nassau is the commonwealth’s largest city a cultural center. It is a wonderful choice for vacationers who enjoy visiting a bustling city. When in Nassau, you have access to outstanding scuba diving along with an exciting city full of unique shops, quaint cafes, and trendy bars.
Diving Packages from Nassau offer an incredible way to see the amazing undersea world of this beautiful paradise. Marine plants and tropical fish will appear in front of you as you navigate through the ocean. From one tank trips to two tank dives, you can control the experience you want to have when you dive Bahamas from Nassau.
Diving From Freeport
The second largest city in the commonwealth, Freeport is much smaller than Nassau, but it is located near some of the best scuba diving spots you’ll find anywhere in the world. Freeport also boasts many tours and attractions that are sure to keep vacationers delighted their entire stay.
Life below the surface of Freeport is remarkably mesmerizing. From coming face to face with a shark to being immersed in a school of tropical fish who call the coral reef home, when you dive from Freeport, you’re sure to see what you hope to and a whole lot more.
Diving From A Cruise
If you’re arriving to the commonwealth via a cruise ship, you can also have the opportunity to do a little scuba diving. Many cruise lines stop for a layover here, which allows you enough time to go on a scuba diving tour with one of the local tour companies. To save some money, book your scuba diving experience directly with one of the tour companies instead of making a diving reservation through your cruise line. When planning a scuba diving trip from a cruise ship, allow plenty of extra time before your dive just in case your ship arrives in port late or it takes you longer than expected to go through customs.

Different types of Designer Swimwear by Dirk Franke
Is there an alternate name for summer season? Why can’t we replace it with the name swimwear season? On a hot summer day, nobody wants their body to be covered up by bulky clothes. To help you get relieved from this burning weather, swimwear and bikinis were made-up. It makes you feel comfortable and free. They are the prominent beach wears, preferred by a wide variety of ladies. Before purchasing a swimwear ensure that you stick on to the current trend, since they come up in different styles each year.
There are excellent varieties of swimwear available in today’s world. High-quality designer swimwear include, maternity swimwear, water aerobic accessories, thermal and sun protective swimwear, wet suits, sports swimwear, mastectomy swimwear, plus sized swimwear, high fashion swimwear and more. Maternity swimwear comes in both two-piece and one-piece suits. They are available in designs that cover your larger belly. This kind of swimwear is preferred by pregnant women who wish to have more coverage area. They cover your bottom half with a skirt attached to it made up of soft stretchy fabrics. Thermal wear and sun protective swimwear are particularly designed for children, in order to prevent harmful UV rays penetrating into their body. They are made up of a heat reflective neoprene material which allows children to maintain their warmth safely. These swimwear are said to block 98% of sunlight, and thereby heat penetrating to the body is merely low. Such sun protective swimwear are now-a-days designed for adults and babies too.
Next is the water sports swimwear, which is quite different than other standard swimsuits. They are designed to be worn for water sports like wind surfing, surfing, water skiing, jet skiing and wake boarding. These swimwear provide you warmth and protection. This is the reason why it differs from other swimsuits. As we knew all other swim suits are designed in a way to give you some chillness on a hot summer day, whereas water sports swimwear offer you warmth and protect you from cold water. Wet suits are yet again another standard swimwear to reflect heat and secure you. They are made up of neoprene material that provides you flexible and comfort feel. These suits are available in both long and short sleeves. Wet suits are also highly durable. A sports swimwear is typically meant for sports use. They include competition swimwear, accessories, training suits, lifeguard suits and practice suits. If you are an over sized person then a plus sized swimsuit would be a better fit for you. A high fashion swimwear can be preferred by fashion lovers.

husband and i are planning to do some Scuba Diving over the christmas (10 days). we will choose an “all-inclusive” plan because it is more convenient. however, we are still not sure about the location. we would like to spend as little money as possible on the accommodations and put more towards the scuba diving but also don’t want to go to for example Cozumel if Riviera Maya has a lot more to offer and a price difference is insignificant. bottom line, we want to do a lot of scuba diving but don’t want to spend a lot of money. I’ve heard Cozumel is the cheapest but i wasn’t really impressed with the photos I’ve seen on the internet or the sport diver magazine. Any suggestion is welcomed. Thank you.
Cozumel has great scuba and snorkeling and some nice AI hotels. However, Cozumel is only a 25 minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. There is much more to do and see in Playa. The ferry leaves every 30-60 minutes so all you have to do is take the ferry over for your scuba diving and then come back. You can also try cenote diving near Playa.
I think you will also find better prices for flight into Cancun vs. Cozumel and more competitive pricing in Playa. Have fun!!

Yes You Should Buy Kids Swim Masks by Sasha Pralica
Goggles can be used for swimming, skiing and in some cases flying however it rarely has it been useful for snorkeling or diving. Alternatively, swim masks are almost always larger than goggles and could usually cover to your nose; they are usually designed for diving including all those who love snorkeling. The explanation for this is because these two techniques would need you to be under the water much of the time, at least the face is facing down while snorkeling, thus the odds of sea water getting inside your nose during pressure is eliminated, this gives the Scuba Diver extra freedom to perform what they’ve to try during the time beneath the water.
Children’s swim masks are no different from the adult ones, only these are smaller and has extra colors. Many mothers and fathers would want to allow their little ones experience things that they are able to do and some of them will be really interested in Scuba Diving. Using goggles may cause numerous troubles beneath the water; that’s why swim masks are very essential to have.
Swim masks comes in 2 types, the regular one which protects up to 50 % of the face, and the second one is named a full-faced mask, which protects the entire face. Regular face masks, whether for young children or older people are able to provide protection to your nose area from the pressure while you are under the water, basically in times wherein you’re using o2, the mouth needs to catch on properly because absolutely nothing slips in your mouth. Then again, a full-faced masks are usually used by experienced scuba divers, the reason is they get more flexibility when it comes to the movement of their face or mouth, they could maintain it wide open since it is all sealed. And of course if their jobs involve threats to get around some jellyfish, their whole face is protected.
Children swim covers are more expensive compared with swimming goggles as it provides them even better protection, even though goggles equally help to protect the eyes; it may not be all you need anytime used under water. If you’re planning to buy your teenager a swim mask pretty soon, be sure you test it onto your child. Always make sure that it fits them nicely and the suction works great, if not it might only beat the purpose of purchasing one. Some swim masks also provide tints and can incorporate corrective contact lenses, so don’t forget to have your kid’s eye checked and ask a family doctor if he or she can suggest you with some quality models.

It is a wonderful thing to get ready for ScubaDiving Vacations. Denver residents can get out of the winter cold and head out to a sunny locale for the best in Scuba Diving. But before you do that, you may need to get some appropriate diving equipment. denver divers will find that they can shop easily online as well as at local stores for the equipment they need for their next scuba diving adventure.
The type of denver diving gear you need will in part depend on where you plan to take your Scuba Diving Vacations. Denver divers that will be vacationing in areas of the world where warm water is the norm may not need any wet suit at all or may opt for a nylon wet suit or a short wet suit to provide the warmth and protection that they need. If the plan is to vacation where the water temperatures are colder, then a full body wet suit or a dry suit might be in order for your diving equipment. Denver swimmers will find all of these, plus accessories such as hoods, boots, vests and gloves, available at better retail Diving Shops.
Another important piece of Denver diving gear is your buoyancy control device, or BCD. This unit, which also goes by the name of buoyancy compensator, keeps you at the appropriate depth in the water and is a necessary part of your divers equipment. Colorado divers will find buoyancy control devices suitable for wear by men and women.
You will also need a breathing apparatus as part of your divers equipment. Colorado scuba divers have options in terms of compressed air or Nitrox, and the type of cylinder that you will use. Divers also need to use a regulator with their diving equipment. Denver divers know that the regulator helps to control the pressure of the air in the tank so that it is breathable by you by the time it reaches you. You will also need a snorkel so that you can conserve air in your cylinder diving equipment; Denver divers also know that they need a pony tank so that you are covered in the event of an emergency.
There are other vital pieces of divers equipment. Colorado swimmers will also want a compass and a Dive Computer. Other information gauges keep track of air pressure in your tank and your depth as you are underwater. You will also want a mask and fins, and maybe a whistle or air horn and a flashlight that is waterproof, called a dive light. Your local Dive Store can offer reliable advice about your needed Divers Equipment. Colorado divers can check in with them prior to taking off on scuba diving vacations; Denver swimmers will then make sure they have all the appropriate Denver diving gear needed for their next Scuba Trip.

Will 4 (2 tank) dives in 4 days be too much for a fairly new Scuba Diver?
I am a new diver. I will have 8-10 dives completed before I leave for the Caribbean in May but need to book vacation dives now (before I’m licensed). Will I be able to manage 1 (2 tank) dive per day for 4 days. Ear soreness, nitrogen level, etc? Thanks
We have no way of answering this question in anything more than the most general terms.
Only you will be able to decide whether you are physically fit enough to cope with 8 dives over 4 days. If so, and you dive sensibly (see below) then you shouldn’t experience any problems in doing so. If not, then consider planning a ‘beach day’ partway through, to give yourself some recovery time (this is anyway a good idea — see below).
Here are some more tips for comfortable/safe Vacation Diving
(1) Make sure you’re correctly weighted, rather than over-weighted. I cannot stress this enough. Getting this right will make everything else easier / safer / more comfortable. It will vastly simplify your buoyancy control, allowing you to make much more controlled descents and ascents (reducing the risk of both ear and nitrogen problems), stretch your air (i.e. dive-time) a lot further, and leaving you less tired after a dive.
(2) Your ears won’t get sore if you remember to equalise early and often during each descent. Do your first equalisation right after you dump your surface buoyancy to begin your descent, and every 2-3 ft (0.5-1.0 m) during the descent (i.e. before the sensation of pressure turns into a sensation of pain!). Descend in a head-up position, and try to avoid ‘sawtooth’ dive profiles with lots of depth (i.e. pressure) changes, and you should be able to minimise or avoid ear problems.
(3) Regarding nitrogen, so long as you keep your dives within the no-stop limits of whatever table or computer you’re using, then there shouldn’t be any issues. If you have the time for it, a beach day partway through your diving will also help to reduce your nitrogen loading. However, like a previous answerer says, you should make sure you have at least 24 hours out of the water before you fly home, because you will have done ‘multiple dives over multiple days’.
(4) Regarding the potential for both equalisation and nitrogen problems, try to avoid getting dehydrated. Primarily that means making sure to drink plenty of (bottled) water, fruit juices or non-cola soft drinks while you’re on vacation. Caffeine and alcohol are both diuretic (make you pee), so drinking coffee, tea, cola or beer/wines/spirits has little net effect on body fluid levels, and (especially with e.g. espressos and liquor shots) may even cause you to lose water.
(When I was working as an instructor in the Red Sea, I aimed to drink 3-4 litres of water per day in the winter months, and 4-6 litres per day in summer. This is probably excessive for the Caribbean, which is a lot more humid than Egypt, but 2-3 litres — 60-90 fl.oz, or 8-12 tall beakers’ worth — would be a reasonable target.)
Getting wasted in the hotel bar the night before diving is also a bad idea (for lots of reasons!). So is running your hotel room A/C at full blast while you’re in the room, because most A/Cs have a ‘dehumidifier’ effect which will dry out your middle ears and sinuses, making it more difficult to equalise the next day. If you have to run your room A/C to make the room cool enough to sleep in, either leave it on at full blast while you’re eating dinner, then turn it off when you get back to the room, or run it at the lowest possible setting (i.e. highest possible temperature) overnight.
If you have any further questions, feel free to email me via Y!A. Otherwise, enjoy your vacation.

Hey does anyone know where to buy cheap professional skimboard in vietnam and if i am able to bring it back on the plane to Australia. Also if anyone knows where skateboards or spearguns are it would be greatly appreciated.
your best shot at that would be to ask around the Dive Shops in nha trang or down at “bai dai” beach[ ask any moto driver in nha trang to take you there]..but my gues is all that stuff is imported from australia….you may try some of the big fancy deptment stores like “diamond plaza” in sai gon..but i doubt it..

You may well be wondering why, in the heading above, the term Couples Resorts is encased in quotation marks, and the reason is really quite simple. As per many of the leading travel sites, the best couples resorts in Jamaica, and there are actually four of them, are actually named the Couples Resorts. In no particular order of rating these include:
All four of these fabulous properties are adult-only and all-inclusive, and while they’re in no way the most luxurious properties in the Caribbean (or in Jamaica, for that matter) all of them are very nice resorts and ideal for those couples interested in romance, solitude and privacy. Here we will check out what every one of these properties provides, such as special packages offered for people who are honeymooning.
The Top Couples Resorts in Jamaica:
Couples Resort Tower Isle
Should you be informed about the Couples resort properties in Jamaica, you almost certainly remember Couples Tower Isle by its former name Couples Ochos Rios. This is actually the oldest and most established Couples Resort, dating back to the late 1940s, however with its recent remodel in 2009 you’d hardly manage to tell the resort was that old.
Couples Tower Isle boasts fantastic service plus a private beach, so you’ll never need to bother about being pressured by vendors. Spend your day lying on the beach or make use of the free catamaran cruise and horseback riding. At night dine out in style at one of several remarkable restaurants and after that visit the nightclub to sway to the latest reggae and Caribbean bands. It is all totally included with this fine resort, including 24-hour room service, so if you’d rather just stay in and enjoy each other’s company, the Couples Tower Isle has you covered.
Couples Negril
Couples Negril is on virtually every list of ‘Best Couples Resorts’ in the Caribbean, and for really good reason. At Couples Negril there’s always plenty for you to do, including catamaran trips, Scuba Diving, windsurfing and a special trip on a glass bottomed boat to take a look at the exotic Caribbean Sea life. If shopping is your thing, take the rapid shuttle service over to the well known Margaritaville or discover Pirate’s Cove. Just about anything you can imagine of to provoke your wild side, you’ll find it at Couples Negril.
Couples Swept Away
Couples Swept Away delivers a good deal of privacy and lovely vistas of both the ocean and the Tropical Gardens. Their state of the art wedding reception room makes this Couples Resort one of the absolute favorites for couples seeking to tie the knot.
Couples San Souci
All 140 suites at Couples San Souci face the stunning, turquoise blue of the Caribbean Sea and its associated white, sandy beaches. Four restaurants, including one that specializes in the very best Italian fare, highlights this stunning oasis of Jamaica.
Every one of these ‘Best Couples resorts’ are all inclusive, so this means one single price tag gets you all the resort offers, including meals, cocktails, entertainment as well as the taxes and gratuity. And for honeymooners, the honeymoon plan comes with fresh flowers, candlelit dinners, his and hers spa treatments and a exclusive beachfront photo.

I’m getting ready to purchase my Scuba gear, and on one hand I have a friend with over 20 years dive experience telling me that Mares makes one of the best regs, yet the gentleman at the local Dive Shop who has 5 years experience tells me that Mares regs suck.
What about the rest of you divers?
Thanks for your input.
Actually, not all gear is created equal. I too have heard the rumblings about Mares this year. ( I dive Apeks now), but have owned mares and Scuba Pro up until I started Tech diving. The Mares just didn’t cut it, especially in my cold water environment and Ice Diving was out of the question, which is the reason I switched to Scuba Pro environmentals. Mares at the time didn’t have a product that could compare at the price I wanted to spend.
I agree that the dive shop will be pushing their own brand that they have the rights to, that’s why it’s important to shop around. Your buddy with the 20 years experience may still be diving an old set and his dives all warm water and not at all demanding.
Here’s a couple links with reviews from both professional divers and feedback from people who have purchsed regs. These aren’t brand specific and will give you a better overall idea of the competition out there and make an informed choice based on your own diving habits and expectations. A warm water open cert’d weekend warrior is going to have different needs than a technical ice diver.

I’m just looking for some advice on my wetsuit. I just bought a 7mm wetsuit of the same Scubapro brand as my 3mm wetsuit. My 3mm I have no problem and can zip up all by myself, my 7mm however I can get it on and fit it all over my body with no issue but when it comes to zipping it up I need a little help. The zipper good as the one on my 3mm.
Anyway, what do you think overall? Is it an ok size? Is this something to be expected with a 7mm vs a 3mm?
Its actually ok. Many surfers need help zipping up. IN fact, a loose wetsuit may not keekp you warm. Overall, I’d say its fine.

Glow Sticks – Best Lighting Tools for Scuba Divers
Scuba Diving during night-time is thrilling and adventurous, but it is linked with certain safety concerns. Therefore, it needs effective light sources to avoid any kind of mishaps. Scuba divers, both professional and recreational, often prefer glow sticks for their lighting needs, identifying co-divers and signaling dangers in the deep waters. This is because glow sticks have some specific features which make them the best lighting tools for scuba diving. Read on further to know about these specific features of glow sticks.
Glow sticks are light-weight and water-proof:
Glow sticks are light in weight and hence, they can be easily carried by scuba divers. They can be simply held in hands or attached to the diver’s tank. These light-weight colorful glow sticks help the divers concentrate more on diving and exploring; which is not possible carrying heavy lighting equipment. Moreover, they are also water-proof and can even tolerate high pressures underwater, making them perfect light sources for scuba diving.
Provide bright illumination for longer time:
Glow sticks offer brighter illumination even in water. Though the amount of chemicals and their quality determines the brightness of light, the standard glow sticks (with good quality chemicals) work well for diving at night. Good quality ones glow for as long as twelve hours.
Different colors of glow sticks can be used by scuba divers, but most preferred ones are green and yellow as they are the brightest colors among others. Apart from the chemical light sticks, special high intensity LED glow sticks with rechargeable batteries serve well for lighting under water.
Act as great marking tools:
Light sticks can be used to mark different locations under water. While Diving In dim light or in dark, scuba divers use them to mark trails in underwater subterranean locations. This enables them to trace out the right path without getting misled by the vastness of the water body. They also illuminate areas under water like caves and crevices in dark and show you interesting marine life and their awesome environment.
Allow communication and coordination among divers:
Communication underwater, particularly in the dark, is very difficult. However, it is made easy for the divers with colorful glow sticks as they promote better communication and coordination. A group of divers underwater can carry unique colored light sticks to identify each other inside the deep-sea. In situations like Scuba Diving Training, the dive master and the followers can use two different colored glow sticks. This way the students can identify and follow the master’s instructions underwater.
Divers can also make different signals in various situations such as suggesting to follow a particular direction, signaling a danger, etc., with the help of these glow sticks.
In addition, glow sticks provide lighting for on-deck emergency situations also. On the whole, glow sticks are the inexpensive, strong, tough, durable and colorful products that make night diving fun and safe.
The Tennessee based Premier Glow offers a wide section of quality Glow sticks
, Glow lights
and all LED toys at affordable prices. They supply only premium quality glow sticks that are 100% safe and sell them at wholesale prices.

You will also learn yoga principles, such as nonviolence, and how they apply to divers. Todd Stedl is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. What can I do to prepare for getting my dive licinese( how do you spell ) ?
I just need to know and drills I can do in my own pool I have a snorkle, flippers with booties and a mask
Assuming you’re talking about getting a basic Scuba Diving certificate (NB not a ‘license’–it has no legal standing), then practicing the following will help prepare you:
In any pool:
Long-distance surface finning (500+ yards/meters without stopping)–will improve your general fitness and increase dive endurance
Snorkel breathing/clearing–will help to prepare you for regulator mouthpiece breathing/clearing
Snorkel removal/replacement/clearing (face immersed)–a skill taught in all basic SCUBA courses
Partial-/fully-flooded mask clearing (face immersed)–a skill taught in all basic SCUBA courses
Underwater finning–practicing this will help make you a more relaxed diver, and help prepare you for the ‘out-of-air’ emergency skill practices, e.g. controlled emergency swimming ascent (CESA) practice on the Padi Open Water Course
If your pool has distinct shallow and deep ends, e.g. 3 ft (1 m) vs. 6 ft (2 m):
Ear equalisation–an essential skill for divers, practice as you swim underwater from the shallow to deep end
If your pool has a sufficiently deep end (8–10 ft, 2.5–3.0 m):
Surface (duck-)dives–one of the snorkelling skills taught (optionally) on most basic SCUBA courses
If you also have a weight belt, with weights (1-2 kg, 2-4 lb is sufficient):
Weight belt removal and ditching–a skill taught in all basic SCUBA courses
Weight belt removal/replacement at the surface–a skill taught in all basic SCUBA courses
If you’re not sure how to do any of these skills, feel free to email me through Y!A

I’m in the midst of getting my Scuba certification now, and all I hear is that you should try to invest in your own gear as soon as possible. However, there are many sites that I’ve come across that GREATLY vary in price (many “discount” places, etc), for example one website will have dive computers prices at $700 starting, where another will have them for under $200. I’m assuming quality the main factor there, but I mean they all do the same job right?
If you guys could point out a couple good sites for me to start browsing and pricing gear I’d appreciate it!
Thanks
Just one thought for you to consider. Annual and regular gear service. Are you going to UPS your gear all the time?
Online sales for minor gear purchases can make sense, sure. Dive Knives, hoods and gloves. dive computers with user replaceable batteries, and lights. Fins…sure if you have already tried that set and know it ( likely from a visit to a Dive Shop)…mask too…again…from a visit to the dive shop. Funny how that works.
Regs, BC, dry suit and even wet suit….not a good idea to buy online unless you like to pay shipping charges often. The money you’d save on the purchase usually goes up in smoke with the shipping back and forth for service ( if they even offer it) and sending things back that don’t fit.
This stuff has to fit…it has to work and be free of defect. Online sales and you’re rolling the dice on all that. In shop visit…you’re not. You get to see if there’s a missed stitch on a strap for example and you’ll get first hand instruction on how to use a particular piece of gear.
For the record…I’ll buy things online that make sense. Buying my dive gear online doesn’t make sense. Besides..I get a 15% discount for being a regular customer at my local dive shop on any purchase, right off the bat and that’s even on merchandise on sale. No online sales will ever offer that to me. I save money this way, I save myself aggravation and I save time.
Edit: As you see, Andrew and I agree on the LDS (local dive shop) versus online approach. This stuff supports your life. It HAS to be serviced regularly by the people that sold it and properly attained by yourself. Look at it this way. How much is your life worth? I’m not kidding…how much? Are you on sale? If I kill you today…do I get a discount on the regs that are factory seconds with “minor defects”.? That’s what you have to answer besides the fact that will your buddy dive with you if he knows you have second rate, potentially unsafe gear. He has to rely on you being safe just as you rely on him/her. It’s their life too.
I don’t dive with newly minted divers who figure they need to thrift on gear purchase and NEVER dive with folk that don’t have their gear regularly serviced or have doubts about their gear period. I may need it to function too, besides the buddy not aborting over some silly gear issue that could have been avoided by spending an extra 10 bucks. Their saving 10 bucks may have ( and has) cost me 60 bucks on a charter and I’ll no longer consider diving with them. I have things to offer experience wise, but not to those that waste my time and money. Their loss. That’s also something to think about. The divers in your LDS likely think the same way.
Sermon done…sorry about that but you pay to play safely and it really is worth any extra cost that may or may not be incurred by just taking a stroll into a dive shop. You get to ask questions and have answers in real time…face to face.

Im going to be spending a day in ecuador on my return from the galapagos. What activities could I do? ( quito)
I’ll be in Quito. Im intrested in rafting, hiking, sky diving, tours, etc.
what r some good companys and their name? Also provide website if possible. Thanks
…just beware, the altitude is very high, about 9200 feet. So move slow and drink lots of water or you can start to feel really sick! It takes a day or two to acclimate so if you only have a day keep your activities kind of mellow.
Quito is a nice city with lots of churches and museums and is very nice to walk around in. The main square is very pretty. Stay in the new town though, which is safer and has better hotels and restaurants. And be careful at night. We didn’t have any problems but we heard lots of stories.
The lonely planet link someone gave you should be really good to plan your day.
Have a great trip!
EDIT: We really liked the equator stuff too. The equator monument is cool, and there’s an outdoor museum nearby at the actual GPS location of the equator that is a lot of fun.
