Scalloping from Cape San Blas Florida
Scalloping around St Joseph Bay on Cape San Blas Florida is an fun activity for all the family. The St Joseph Bay is quite calm, clean, and the depths are very uniform. You do not require a vessel or any special gear. Children, as young as 3, and their great grandparents can enjoy the day scalloping and playing in the crystal clear waters of the St Joe bay. Scalloping season normally opens about the beginning of July and ends about September 15th. The method for gathering scallops is very simple. Put on your mask and snorkle then go down and collect some scallops. Some places will have higher concentrations than others. Look in locations that are not so accessible by boat or are deeper than your height. These will be the locations that have not been scalloped yet.
What You Need for Scalloping
1. Florida Saltwater fishing license for all persons over 16
2. Sun protector
3. Several spoons
4. A dive flag displayed on your boat or floating near by
5. A quart container
6. Bring something to drink and eat
7. Fins, snorkel, mask and net bag
How to prep your scallops
After you have your scallops the best time to clean them is while you are on the water. Divide up the scallops with those cleaning and pass out the spoons. Stick the end of the spoon into the barely opened scallops. Use the edge of the spoon to scrape one side of the shell from the inside. Next lever the scallop open. Place the spoon to the crux of the muscle from the hinge side of the scallop. Secure the pliable part of the scallop using your thumb begin to pull this jelly part off the still attached muscle part like taking a shirt over the head of a child. Now you can harvest the muscle from the scallop shell.
How to cook your scallops
First know that scallops can be eaten raw without cooking. This will assist you understand cooking principles of brazing using a hot pan and a short cooking time. I like to prepare my other dishes before. My favorite choice is sauteed green beans using olive oil. I will use the same pan for sauntering the scallops. Season the scallops to taste with season salt, pepper or cajun spices. Place the scallops in the hot pan gently. The oil should be hot. If you hear them cook the temperature is right. The scallops should sear and barely brown one side then flip them over and sear another thrity seconds before they are finished. All that is left to do is enjoy your scallops with everyone.
